Vessel Safety Checks

A Vessel Safety Check is a free courtesy examination of your boat to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by State and Federal regulations.

The Vessel Examiner is a trained specialist and a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. They will make certain recommendations and discuss certain safety issues that will help you to become a better boater.

No citations will be given as a result of this inspection and no report will be made to the US Coast Guard or local law enforcement if the boat fails to pass. We will supply you with a copy of our evaluation so that you may follow some of the suggestions given.

An example of some of the items checked include:
  • Personal Flotation Devices (life jackets)
  • Registration and numbering
  • Navigation lights
  • Ventilation
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Distress signals (flares, horn, etc.)
  • Battery covers, connections and fuses
Vessel Safety Check decalAll of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if missing or non-operating, could result in a citation if your vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard or Local Law Enforcement.

The Vessel Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you meet the minimum legal requirements and potentially avoid a later citation.

Vessels that pass our exam will be able to display our distinctive VSC decal that shows that you are carrying all of the proper equipment. This will not exempt you from a law enforcement boarding, but you will be prepared to make it a positive encounter.
